NASA is planning to test out the feasibility of space travel via solar sails by putting the largest one ever constructed into space. The huge sail will be 125′x125′, a solid seven times larger than any previously launched sails.
As big as that is, much, much bigger versions will be needed if we ever hope to have them drag astronauts around. But with this one, they’ll be able to test out maneuverability, using vanes on the tips of is cross beams.
If successful, look for the solar sail to replace fire-blasting engines in the realistic sci-fi movies of the future.
