Massive algae bloom

A huge bright green algal bloom, seen in the upper area of this image, has been created by the snow blown off Antarctica into the nearby ocean.

The bloom, which is about 120 miles wide and 60 miles long, has been described by scientists as the largest growth in living memory.

This image was taken from the Modis instrument on the Terra satellite, 650 km from the Earth.

Dr Jan Lieser, a marine glaciologist, monitors the sea ice conditions in East Antarctic using satellite data for the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre in Hobart, Australia.

He has been following the bloom through imagery provided by NASA since mid-February and says this is a remarkable natural event. He has never seen an algal bloom this size off East Antarctica.
