Holey Optochip- the one trillion bits per second Chip
IBM reported that has developed a prototype optical chip that has hit a significant milestone in optical data transfer: one trillion bits per second, or one terabit, like downloading 500 HD movies at once.
The new prototype optical chipset dubbed “Holey Optochip”, IBM reported at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference in Los Angeles, compactly and efficiently delivers ultra-high interconnect bandwidth to power future supercomputer and data center applications.
Until now, it was not possible to transport terabits of data for existing parallel optical communications technology.
Researchers at IBM invent novel technique by fabricating tiny holes in a single quarter-inch chip to boost data transfer rates.
