New images of Planet Mercury

A perspective view of the immense volcanic plains that span Mercury’s northern latitudes, from Messenger spacecraft, colorized by the topographic height of the surface. The purple colors are the lowest and white is the highest.

A mosaic photograph of Planet Mercury, from images taken from the spacecraft Messenger. Messenger has nearly completed two of its main global imaging campaigns.

This graphic shows a comparison of the internal structures of Earth and Mercury as currently understood based on the latest data from the MESSENGER mission. Mercury’s interior has a larger ratio of metallic core material to silicate rock material than the Earth. Mercury also appears to have a solid layer of iron sulfide that lies at the top of the core.
