Why F1 cars are so safe (video)
The monocoque is the safety cell of all Formula One cars and that of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car of Nico Rosberg. In the video (after the jump) Nico Rosberg explains how the monocoque saves his life. You can also see spectacular crash tests from the Allianz Center of Technology in Munich.
It was the aircraft industry which used carbon fibre (which is light, but very strong) monocoques first, only to be adapted by Formula One. In case of an impact only the nose is supposed to crumble.
