New extreme fast wireless transmission tech

American and Israeli researchers have created the fastest wireless network ever, by using twisted, vortex beams to transmit data at 2.5 terabits per second (Tb/s), the equivalent of transmitting seven Blu-ray movies per second! This is around 8,000 times faster than the average home internet connection!

Twisted light beams with different values of orbital angular momentum, can be used to provide extreme increases in the capacity of communications.

“You’re able to do things with light that you can’t do with electricity,” said Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. “We didn’t invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second.”
