Luxury fashion brand Prada has once again teamed up with Axiom Space to reveal a new inner-layer garment that future NASA astronauts will wear on missions to the Moon.

The two companies previously unveiled the lunar spacesuit design in 2024. Now, they have introduced the new Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), an important layer worn underneath the spacesuit.

Using advanced 3D design technology, the garment helps keep astronauts cool while they work. Since astronauts produce a lot of body heat during spacewalks, the suit circulates cold water through a network of tubes that run across major muscle groups, absorbing excess heat and carrying it away.

The LCVG will be worn beneath the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, which is designed to handle the harsh conditions of the lunar environment, including extreme temperatures, abrasive moon dust, and the challenges of working in space.

Jonathan Cirtain, Axiom Space’s CEO and president, said:

“The future of space exploration will not be built by any one entity alone, and our partnership with Prada is proof of that. By bringing together the best in both aerospace engineering as well as luxury craftmanship and advanced product development, we have developed a garment that neither company could have created independently, and that is exactly the kind of cross-industry thinking that will define the next era of human spaceflight.”

Why it matters:

Better thermal control can help astronauts stay outside longer and work more effectively on the lunar surface. This is important for future exploration missions that will involve construction, science experiments, and resource investigations.

The Moon has extreme temperature swings, and astronauts can generate a lot of body heat while working. A cooling garment helps prevent overheating, which is essential for health, comfort, and performance during spacewalks.
