Antarctic rescue of Akademik Shokalskiy ship

The 52 passangers from the Akademik Shokalskiy, the ship that had been trapped in Antarctic ice for nearly 10 days, have now been rescued.   Image © Andrew Peacock

Passengers were transported by helicopter in groups to the Aurora Australis Chinese icebreaker.



The remaining crew of 22 will stay on board the Akademik Shokalskiy, in Antarctica until the ship becomes free.

“We’ve made it to the Aurora Australis safe & sound. A huge thanks to the Chinese & @AusAntarctic for all their hard work!,” expedition leader Chris Turney tweeted.
