Biggest Eye Surgery ever

The biggest eye surgery ever for cataract at Duchess, a 45-year-old African elephant, at the Paignton Zoo in Devon, England. She had already lost her right eye to glaucoma.    Image credit: Richard Austin

The 4.4-ton Duchess, had a surgery similar to the one that 1.8 million Americans undertake each year.



Vet Jim Carter made the operation at Duchess, along with a team of 9 persons and specially designed tools.

The operation was successful and Duchess is in good health.
