Many people around the world lack access to safe drinking water and researchers are looking to find solutions such as desalination, though it’s an energy-intensive process that requires reverse osmosis of water.

Now designers have come up with a system that uses renewable energy such as wind to make it possible. The Aeolus system uses wind energy to produce mechanical power to drive a pump to push water through a series of filters, including the reverse osmosis membrane, to produce clean water, which is then stored for use.
