FIU's third-generation hurricane simulator

The 12-fan Wall of Wind (WOW) at Florida International University (FIU) is the largest and most powerful university research facility of its kind and is capable of simulating a Category 5 hurricane, the highest rating on the Saffir-Simspon Hurricane Wind Scale.   Watch the videos

The WOW is used to test the stability of building designs, the materials and the roof-mounted equipment, such as solar panels and air conditioning units, in hurricane conditions.

College of Engineering and Computing Dean Amir Mirmiran said.



“Anyone who lived through Hurricane Andrew or has seen the images of devastation and despair in communities after hurricanes, knows how important this research is to save lives and improve the quality of life for all of us in South Florida,”
