Gunkanjima Ghost Island

The Gunkanjima or Hasima is a remote ghost island in Japan, that once had the highest population density in the world. It’s location of filming some of the scenes James Bond, Skyfall.   Image credit: wikipedia

Gunkanjima mysterious ghost island, just off the coast of Nagasaki, was inhabited from 1887 to 1974, because of the rich coal mining industry.

By the 1950s, it housed almost 6,000 people, becoming the highest population density the world!

In the 1970s, coal is running out and the population left the island.
The island  less than one square kilometer, in 1941 was producing 400,000 tonnes of coal per year. Many of those working, were forced laborers from Korea.

At the island without green were ten-story apartment buildings, restaurants, schools and gaming houses.
