Mitsubishi's Air Lubrication System Improving fuel efficiency

Mitsubishi’s Air Lubrication System (MALS) uses powerful air pumps to blow lots of tiny little bubbles through holes in the bottoms of ships. The company claims that the conceptual design would offer a reduction in CO2 emissions of 35 percent.

The concept is that the bubbles create a barrier of air between the hull of the ship and the water, so that much of the ship’s hull isn’t actually touching the water. This drastically reduces friction and for cargo ships that will be a reduction of fuel consumption by a quarter.
