The Foldscope Paper Microscope includes no mechanical moving parts, can be assembled in minutes, packs in a flat configuration, is very rugged and can be incinerated after to safely dispose of infectious biological samples.



According to Stanford bioengineer Manu Prakash and colleagues the microscope with minor optics modifications, can be designed for brightfield, for multi-flourescence or projection microscopy, or specialized to identify specific pathogens.
