Painting Deer Antlers to Reduce Accidents

Santa Clause may soon be more easily spotted!  The Finnish Reindeer Herders Association is testing out a new way to make large mammals more visible to drivers and will test the idea of painting the antlers of reindeer so they will reflect motorists’ headlights.   Image © Anne Ollila

The spray is being tested on fur at the moment but may prove even more effective on antlers.  While most safety measures that try to prevent motorists from hitting animals are concerned with cars and roads, the Finns have taken a more ‘reflective’ action and put the focus on the animals themselves.
