the brain

A study in the journal Cell claims that forgetting is an essential function of the brain so that we’re not cognitively overwhelmed.

The study details how forgetting is an active and controlled process in the brain, rather than a passive process as previously thought, and claims that there are two competing proteins —  one which helps us to remember and one that helps us two forget —  which compete to determine whether  memories will be retained.  Further research is underway to determine if this new knowledge could be used to treat condition such as Alzheimer’s.
