Sunset on Bark Lake in Ontario

A beautiful September sunset on Bark Lake in Ontario Canada by photographer Mary Brown. She said: The sunsets at Bark Lake are wonderful.  Every night I am there, I am on the beach with my camera. The night this picture was taken was particularly gorgeous.  I am so glad I was there at the time.   Image credit: Mary Brown    Used with permission.

Not all attractive sunsets have strident colors; some have more subtle coloration but are nonetheless eye-catching. Clouds at different heights result in different color hues when the Sun is low in the sky.

Higher clouds tend to give the brightest colors since they’re still directly illuminated by the Sun. In general, at sunrise and sunset, lower clouds carry less color than higher ones. From my perspective on the shore of Bark Lake, Ontario, the cloud formations on the evening of September 4, 2012 were positioned just right to not only catch the Sun’s lingering rays but to also capture dramatic reflections on the lake’s calm surface. There aren’t many days during the summer when the water is smooth enough on Bark Lake to act almost like a mirror. I was fortunate that the lovely sky and placid waters came together when my camera was handy. Note the crepuscular rays fanning out above the setting Sun.   Summary Authors: Mary Brown; Jim Foster
