A rare ice rainbow in the sky above the Isle of Wight that left people wondering if they had witnessed a UFO. The phenomenon known as a ‘sundog’ was seen hovering over the bay of Cowes on the northern coast of the island on Saturday, creating an intense streak of coloured light in the clouds. A ‘sundog’ is formed as sunlight passes through ice crystals in the atmosphere which are usually present when thin, wispy cirrus clouds are gathering.
As the ice crystals sink they become aligned, creating the characteristic vertical rainbow.
