More than 500 divers and snorkelers descended Saturday in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for an underwater concert.
The Underwater Music Festival is back in session for it’s 27th year. The Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival offered an offbeat salute to rock with divers costumed as “Eel-vis Presley,” “Bob Marlin,” “Joss “Stone Crab” and other famed musicians.
Staged by radio station WWUS, the event took place at Looe Key Reef, about six miles south of Big Pine Key. The station’s four-hour commercial-free broadcast was piped underwater via speakers suspended beneath boats positioned above the reef. Organizers said the sound quality was clear, with an ethereal effect caused by the sound waves’ transmission through water.
