Whales and Dolphins

Unlike most vertebrates who can enjoy five distinct tastes, dolphins and whales can only discern one: salty.

The four tastes of sweet, sour, bitter and umami that we humans experience are lost on sperm and baleen whales as well as bottlenose dolphins. Scientists believe this mutation occurred around 53 million years ago and probably arose because these animals swallow their prey whole.
