The major 55 meters deep engineering project, was a plan initially proposed by an Ottoman sultan about 150 years ago.
Back in 2004, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who was then mayor of Istanbul, revived the plan to ease traffic congestion and pollution in Istanbul.

It is hoped the new tunnel will create a trading route, connecting China and Western Europe.
