The Shams 1, world’s largest concentrated solar power plant was officially inaugurated at Madinat Zayed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. on 18 March 2013.
With a capacity of 100 MW, is the biggest operating solar power station in the world, serving 20,000 homes.
The plant covers 2.5 sq/km of desert, equal to 285 football pitches and has 258,048 parabolic mirrors that collect sunlight. This process creates steam, which powers turbines to generate electricity.
The project took about two years and $600 million to build and it will save 175,000 tons of CO2 each year.
