The microscopic three dimensional sandcastles created with the use of a focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope.

After four years of experimentation, Photographer Vik Muniz and designer Marcelo Coelho successfully created microscopic drawings of castles on single grains of sand. Take an in-depth look into the advanced and archaic processes and inspirations behind these revolutionary micro-masterpieces.

‘When someone tells you it’s a grain of sand, there’s a moment where your reality falls apart and you have to reconstruct it. You have to step back and ask what the image is and what it means’.
