Shell develops EV thermal fluid for sub-10-minute and safer charging.

Immersion cooling enables the design of smaller, lighter batteries that can provide up to five times more driving range compared to standard BEVs, while still utilizing today’s charging infrastructure.

Shell Lubricants has developed and tested a new high-performance EV thermal management fluid that reduces charging times without compromising safety, thermal stability, or battery life, thereby accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.

Working with UK-based automotive innovator RML Group, Shell developed a 34 kWh battery pack using Shell EV-Plus Thermal Fluid, built on Shell’s proprietary Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) technology. This system can charge from 10% to 80% in less than 10 minutes. The fluid significantly lowers thermal stress, allowing batteries to handle much higher charging currents.

When paired with an efficient, lightweight, aerodynamic vehicle capable of 10 km/kWh, this technology could deliver charging speeds equivalent to 24 km of driving range per minute, far above the ~5 km per minute seen in many current BEVs, while reducing weight and component count.
