Inside the Swedish Navy’s Visby-class Corvette, a $200M stealth ship also known as the ‘Ghost of the Baltic.’

The Visby-class Corvette is one of the world’s most advanced stealth warships.

Operated by the Swedish Navy, these sleek vessels are often called the “Ghost of the Baltic” because they are exceptionally difficult to detect with radar, infrared sensors, sonar, and even magnetic sensors. Designed specifically for the confined and island-filled waters of the Baltic Sea, they combine stealth, speed, and powerful weapons in a relatively small package.

Why is it so stealthy?

Unlike conventional steel warships, the Visby is built largely from carbon-fiber composite materials, making it much lighter while dramatically reducing its radar signature. Every external surface is sharply angled to scatter radar waves, and nearly all equipment, including the main gun, is hidden behind flush panels when not in use. Exhaust gases are cooled before leaving the ship to reduce its infrared signature, while the hull also minimizes acoustic and magnetic signatures.
