Japan built a 400-kilometer tsunami seawall after the March 11, 2011 disaster wiped out much of its coastal defenses.
In just one hour, about 90% of the country’s seawalls failed.
Engineers responded by rebuilding the coastline with a $12.7 billion defense system stretching 400 kilometers. The new seawalls stand up to 14.7 meters high and include 443 automated floodgates that can close in less than five minutes without human assistance.
This documentary follows the entire engineering and construction process, from the first foundations to the finished seawalls. It also features the 2022 real-world test, when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake automatically activated all 443 floodgates at the same time.
