All-Sky Gamma-ray Map NASA, DOE, Fermi LAT Collaboration

The all-sky Gamma-ray map illustrates how NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope views the universe.

Fermi detects light with energies a billion times higher than what the human eye can see, and this map is based on 12 years of observations.

The colors show the brightness of gamma-ray sources, with lighter colors indicating brighter sources. The bright stripe in the middle represents the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy.

Most of the red and yellow dots above and below the Milky Way are distant galaxies, while those within the plane are nearby pulsars. The blue background is the faint gamma-ray glow from distant, undetectable sources. Some gamma-ray sources remain unidentified, and their nature is still a mystery.
