BMW and MINI are revolutionizing car production with self-driving vehicles that navigate off the assembly line autonomously.

Under the BMW iFACTORY initiative, the company has advanced digital and automated production since 2022, testing its Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW) system at its Dingolfing plant. After successful certification, the system is now being rolled out for regular use.

The technology, already in use at Dingolfing for models like the BMW 5 and 7 Series, is expanding to the Leipzig plant for the MINI Countryman and other models. Vehicles drive autonomously over a one-kilometer route from assembly to the finishing area, guided by Europe’s largest LIDAR sensor network and advanced cloud-based controls. Developed with Swiss startup Embotech AG, this system ensures seamless automated movement, regardless of vehicle configuration.

Leipzig aims to automate 90% of its BMW and MINI production, with Regensburg, Oxford, and Debrecen set to adopt the system by 2025.

Milan Nedeljković, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, explains:

“Automated Driving In-Plant optimizes our production process and delivers significant efficiency gains for our logistics. That is why we will be swiftly rolling out this technology throughout our production network.”
