BMW Startup Garage and the Munich-based company DeepDrive are set to road-test a groundbreaking e-drive electric motor.

The new motor features dual rotor technology, promising highly efficient and powerful drives with extended range. Following a successful pilot project with promising test rig results, BMW Group and DeepDrive are now planning their first field test.

DeepDrive’s innovative concept combines two electric motors into a single, compact, and energy-efficient unit with high torque density. Unlike conventional electric motors, where the stator moves either an internal or external rotor, DeepDrive’s dual rotor concept allows the stator to drive both rotors simultaneously.

This design enables an in-wheel drive system, with each wheel hub containing its own electric motor, or a traditional centralized drive system with a central motor block powering the vehicle.

BMW recognizes the maturity and scalability potential of DeepDrive’s innovation. BMW was the first major manufacturer to identify DeepDrive’s potential and has intensified collaborations with them since the IAA 2021. Their technology is already notably advanced.

Karol Virsik, Head of Research Vehicle Concepts and Technologies at the BMW Group, said:
“DeepDrive’s prototype parts largely exceeded our specifications. That’s really unusual at such an early stage and with a completely new technology.”
