BYD’s new charging system powers up EVs in just five minutes.

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a high-speed charger that can add up to 250 miles of range in five minutes.

Founder Wang Chuanfu revealed the “Super e-Platform” during a livestream from BYD’s headquarters. The system delivers 1,000 kW of power and supports up to 1,000 amps, charging at a rate of about 1.24 miles per second.

BYD’s advanced battery cooling technology outperforms rivals like Tesla.

For comparison, Tesla’s fastest Superchargers provide 200 miles in 15 minutes with 250 kW. Even with planned 500 kW chargers, Tesla’s technology still lags behind BYD, the world’s top EV maker.

“This lets the battery reach peak charging power faster and sustain that peak power longer during the charging cycle, thus increasing the average charging power during the charging cycle and allowing for significantly faster charging,” according to the Financial Times.
