Back in the 1980s, Lockheed imagined a very unusual aircraft, basically a jumbo jet with an open, flat cargo bed, like a flying pickup truck.
It was designed to carry huge or oddly shaped cargo, and even a detachable passenger module that could be loaded onto the aircraft.
The idea was simple: one basic aircraft structure could handle different roles. It would include the cockpit, wings, engines, and tail, but instead of a traditional enclosed fuselage, it had a flat central platform.
Whatever you needed to carry, cargo containers, vehicles, or a passenger pod, would sit on that platform and effectively become the body of the aircraft.

To make loading easier, the front section could be removed for direct access, while the tail design allowed access from the rear as well.
