Heart Aerospace’s X1, the full-scale demonstrator for the ES-30 regional aircraft, has been cleared for its first test flights by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category after inspecting the aircraft at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, allowing Heart Aerospace to begin flight testing.

The ES-30 is a hybrid-electric aircraft designed to carry up to 30 passengers on short regional routes. It uses two electric motors and two turboprop engines, allowing it to fly on battery power, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or a combination of both. This approach aims to reduce fuel use, operating costs, and carbon emissions.

The aircraft is expected to have an all-electric range of about 200 kilometers (125 miles) and a hybrid range of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles). The first flights of the X1 demonstrator will test the performance of Heart Aerospace‘s electric propulsion system and help advance the development of the production ES-30.

Why it matters:
Regional aviation is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. Successful test flights of the X1 could bring hybrid-electric passenger aircraft closer to commercial service, making short-haul flights cleaner, quieter, and more energy-efficient while reducing emissions from regional air travel.
