A new study using data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope shows that star formation in the nearby Andromeda galaxy has been slowing down for the past 500 million years, with an even sharper decline over the last 40 million years.

Andromeda is a spiral galaxy similar in size to our Milky Way. It lies about 2.5 million light-years from Earth and is close enough to be seen with the naked eye from dark-sky locations. Because it is so nearby, astronomers can study its stars in remarkable detail, helping them better understand how galaxies like our own have evolved.

To uncover Andromeda’s history, researchers combined data from two major Hubble surveys that mapped about two-thirds of the galaxy’s disk in extraordinary detail. By analyzing around 200 million individual stars, they created one of the most complete records yet of Andromeda’s star-forming past, revealing that the galaxy has been producing fewer and fewer new stars over time.

Why it matters:

Andromeda gives astronomers a glimpse into the future of galaxies like our own. Understanding why its star formation is slowing could reveal how spiral galaxies age, evolve, and eventually run out of the gas needed to create new stars, including what may lie ahead for the Milky Way.
