BYD has introduced its new Blade Battery 2.0, which promises more than 1,000 km (621 miles) of driving range and extremely fast charging.
The new battery system is expected to appear first in the Yangwang U7, a large luxury sedan, helping address common EV concerns like limited range and long charging times.
Under CLTC testing, the battery can deliver over 1,000 km of range. It can also charge very quickly, going from 10% to 70% in about five minutes, and reaching 97% in around nine minutes under ideal conditions.
Although it is not a solid-state battery, the Blade Battery 2.0 shows how improvements in lithium battery technology are steadily reducing worries about range and charging speed.
Today, BYD is the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer.
The battery achieves its fast charging using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This type of battery helps lower EV costs, avoiding expensive metals like cobalt and nickel.
