Drunk Driving Prevention Technology

New cars in the U.S. may soon come with built-in tech that checks if a driver is drunk or impaired before they even start driving.

By 2027, federal rules are expected to require all new vehicles to include systems that automatically detect impairment. These could use infrared cameras to watch the driver, or sensors that detect alcohol through breath or even touch. If the system thinks the driver isn’t fit to drive, it could stop the car from starting or limit how fast it can go.

This plan comes from a 2021 law that told regulators to create better ways to prevent drunk driving using modern technology.

Why it matters:
This could significantly reduce accidents and save lives by stopping impaired drivers before they get on the road.
