Greece’s government has declared a state of emergency on Santorini as the island experiences frequent earthquakes, sometimes just minutes apart.
The “earthquake swarm” is also affecting nearby Aegean islands. It started in late January with many small tremors (under magnitude 3) that were mostly unnoticeable. However, in early February, the quakes became stronger and more frequent.
In the past two weeks, thousands of earthquakes have been recorded, with up to 30 per day exceeding magnitude 4.0. Most are occurring at depths of less than 10km, making them strong enough to be felt by residents.
