Skiing Down Mount Everest

Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel became the first person to climb Mount Everest and ski all the way back to Base Camp without using extra oxygen.

After almost 16 hours in the “death zone” above 8,000 meters—where the air is extremely thin—Bargiel reached the summit, clipped on his skis, and began his descent down the South Col Route.

He made it to Camp II that evening and stopped to rest. The summit ridge and Hillary Step had taken longer than expected, and falling darkness made it too dangerous to continue.

The next morning, he skied through the dangerous Khumbu Icefall with help from a drone piloted by his brother, Bartek. He reached Base Camp safely, becoming the first person ever to climb and ski down Everest without supplemental oxygen.
