Snow chain-integrated tire technology solution works at the push of a button and helps to drive safely on snowy roads.
Hyundai Motor and Kia have developed an advanced snow chain system, that uses shape memory alloy modules hidden inside the wheel and tire, working when an electrical signal is received.
The groundbreaking technology involves placing shape memory alloy modules inside the wheels and tires. With a simple button press, these modules extend to function as instant snow chains, eliminating the hassle of manual installation.
The patent-pending system is designed for repeated use, leveraging the shape memory alloy’s ability to revert to its original form. This innovation not only saves time for drivers who no longer need to deal with traditional snow chains but also enhances safety during sudden, heavy snowfall.
Following further technological development, durability and performance tests, and regulatory reviews, Hyundai Motor and Kia are exploring the possibility of mass production for this cutting-edge system.
“This innovation, which will hopefully be introduced on Hyundai and Kia vehicles someday, reflects our commitment to turning advanced technologies into real-world solutions that benefit customers,” said Joon Mo Park, Head of Advanced Chassis Development Team. “We will continue to develop technologies that enhance safety and convenience of our vehicles and bring value to our customers.”
