SpaceX Scores Second Booster Catch

Just hours after Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin completed its first orbital mission, SpaceX scored its second booster catch on Thursday.

At 4:37 PM local time (22:37 GMT), SpaceX’s Starship—a taller, upgraded version of the most powerful rocket ever built—launched from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, for its seventh test flight.

The mission’s highlight was the successful landing of the Super Heavy booster, which slowed from supersonic speeds and gently returned to the launch tower, creating dramatic sonic booms along the way.

However, the celebration was cut short when the rocket’s upper stage disintegrated over the Atlantic. SpaceX confirmed the mishap, describing it as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” a term the company uses for explosions. The failure was attributed to a propulsion issue, as noted during the live broadcast.
