The Subsonic Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project works with industry and government partners to identify, select, and develop critical aircraft technologies, such as new wing designs, for next-generation single-aisle passenger airplanes.

Moving new technology from research to real aircraft production is often difficult. Many promising ideas are not adopted because of technical challenges and financial risks.

In partnership with industry, NASA plans to:

Design and flight-test an advanced aircraft configuration and related technologies to significantly reduce fuel use.

Collect ground data to help NASA and industry teams confirm the benefits of these new technologies.

Use the results to support industry decisions about the next generation of single-aisle airliners.
