The UK’s new Combat Air Flying Demonstrator is now closer to takeoff.

Industry partners BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, and MBDA UK, along with the Ministry of Defence, have revealed the design of the UK’s new Combat Air Flying Demonstrator. The project has hit a major milestone, with two-thirds of the aircraft’s structural weight now in production.

This piloted supersonic jet is the first aircraft of its kind to be built in the UK in 40 years. Its main body, wings, and tail fins are coming together using advanced robotic and digital manufacturing techniques at BAE Systems’ facilities in Lancashire, showing significant progress in its development.

The aircraft is being built to test a wide range of new technologies, including stealth-related features. It plays a key role in developing future manufacturing methods and reducing risks for the next generation of combat aircraft, which will be created through the Global Combat Air Programme involving the UK, Italy, and Japan.
