Firefighters in Greece are working to contain a fast-moving wildfire that spread through multiple neighborhoods in Athens on Monday.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated as the large blaze reached the outskirts of the city, with flames soaring as high as 25 meters.

The image, taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission on 12 August 2024, shows the fires surrounding Athens. The image uses processing to show vegetation in red and burned areas in black, with over 100 square kilometers affected.

In response, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated to provide initial damage estimates and emergency maps for the affected Attica Region.
