The city of Los Angeles has completed a program to cover the 175-acre open air reservoir in Sylmar, California, with floating “shade balls” to protect valuable water.

The new four inch diameter shade polyethylene balls, will prevent evaporation and protect the water from dust and chemicals.
They cost 36 cents each and their black color is helping deflect Sun’s UV rays, to improve the quality of stored water.
