Researchers suggest deploying a colossal “umbrella” as big as Argentina, positioned 9 million miles away from Earth, to block Sun‘s rays.
They claim this could reduce global warming by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit within two years.
To kickstart the project, scientists at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, are seeking $20 million to create a prototype measuring 100 square feet. However, the final version would need to cover one million square miles.
The proposed “umbrella” would essentially be a large sail in space, operating by opening and closing its shading layer. Despite enthusiasm from some researchers, critics argue that the cost of this “megastructure” would be astronomical, potentially reaching into the trillions of dollars.

The idea of dimming or blocking the sun as a method to cool the Earth has been contemplated by various scientists.
Harvard physicist Avi Loeb commented on the project:
“Erecting any of these ‘megastructures’ in space would be very expensive and require a major international collaboration through reallocation of funds from military budgets to peaceful purposes.”
