Solar energy leads to a rise in clean energy and has helped push clean power past 40% of global electricity in 2024.
According to Ember’s latest Global Electricity Review, rapid growth in renewable energy helped clean electricity make up more than 40% of global power generation in 2024.
The sixth edition of the report gives a clear picture of how the world’s electricity mix changed in 2024. It highlights major trends, what’s driving them, and what they mean for the future of energy and emissions.
Key findings:
Clean electricity made up 41% of global power
Solar power grew by 29% in 2024
Wind power rose by 7.9%
Fossil fuel generation increased slightly by 1.4%
Coal mines leaked 40 Mt of methane in 2023
Alongside the report, Ember has published the first free, complete dataset on global electricity generation for 2024.
The analysis covers electricity data from 215 countries. This includes reported 2024 data for 88 countries—together making up 93% of global electricity use—and estimates for the rest. It also looks at trends in 13 global regions, including Africa, Asia, the EU, and the G7.
