Google’s first Geothermal Energy Project in Nevada powers its Data Centers.
Google partnered with a clean-energy startup Fervo for the development of a first-of-its-kind geothermal project that is now operational in Nevada and is now contributing carbon-free energy to the electric grid.
To speed up the fight against climate change, Google is pushing for a quick shift to clean energy worldwide. Its big goal is to run the data centers and offices entirely on carbon-free energy, 24/7, by 2030, to play a part in rapidly reducing carbon in global electricity systems.

To make this happen, one exciting opportunity is enhanced geothermal energy, a method using new techniques to capture steady heat from the Earth’s crust, creating electricity without burning fossil fuels or emitting carbon.

Two years ago, we partnered with clean-energy startup Fervo on the world’s first corporate agreement to develop an enhanced geothermal power project. Today, we are pleased to announce that our geothermal project is now operational, and carbon-free electricity has started flowing onto the local grid that serves our data centers in Nevada.
