Crafted in collaboration with ESA and Cranfield University, this innovative plan was revealed at ESA’s Space Research and Technology Center during its annual Space for Inspiration event. It represents a significant stride toward establishing a permanent human settlement on the moon.

Developed with input from anthropologists, psychologists, robotics experts, and astronauts, the Lunar Habitat Master Plan goes beyond basic livability to envision a thriving community of nearly 150 people in lunar conditions. This people-focused approach considers everything from essential living spaces to recreational areas, including restaurants and sports arenas, and even earth-like environments such as expansive greenhouses.

Designed for the ESA’s Discovery program, the habitat system is intended to support the crucial missions of national space agencies like NASA, ESA, and Jaxa, while also accommodating commercial space ventures, companies, and tourists.

Advenit Makaya, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, European Space Agency, said:
“Hassell has come up with a very interesting design, which combines a good understanding of the lunar environment constraints and a vision for the future of human exploration of the lunar surface.”
