Scientists at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering discovered a new type of fire, the blue whirl, that lacks the distinctive yellow color of traditional flames.

Blue whirls evolve from typical yellow fire whirls, but are smaller, very stable and completely blue, indicating soot-free burning.
