NUVIA has been awarded a major design-build contract for the UK’s newest fusion energy project as part of the ILIOS consortium.

The consortium includes Kier Group, along with partners AECOM, Turner & Townsend, and AL_A. It has been selected by UK Industrial Fusion Solutions to act as the construction partner for the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme.

This €230 million contract will run for 4.5 years and covers the first phase of the project.

The goal of STEP is to build a working fusion power plant by 2040 at West Burton Power Station. If successful, it could be a major step forward in creating clean, reliable, and abundant energy.

NUVIA will play a key role in delivering the project, focusing on engineering, innovation, and helping move the UK toward a cleaner energy future.

Beyond the technology, the project is expected to create skilled jobs, boost local industries, and support economic growth in the Midlands, while helping prepare a sustainable energy system for future generations.

In short, this isn’t just about imagining fusion energy, it’s about actually building it.

Tom Jones, CEO of NUVIA UK, says: “We are proud to be part of this landmark moment for fusion. By combining our expertise with our partners, we are helping shape a future that will transform the UK fusion industry and contribute to global energy supply.”
