Porsche has launched a pilot project to recover valuable materials from used high-voltage batteries to create a closed-loop recycling system.

The goal is to support the growing need for recycled battery materials and promote responsible battery handling. In the long run, Porsche plans to build a recycling network with the help of external partners.

The project is divided into three phases to test a process that could be used on a larger scale:

Phase 1: Used batteries from test vehicles are shredded and turned into what’s known as “black mass”—a mix that contains important raw materials like nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium. So far, about 65 tons of black mass have been created.

Phase 2: This black mass is further processed to extract and purify the raw materials needed to make new batteries. Porsche is especially focused on ensuring the recycled materials are high-quality and pure enough for use in its electric vehicle batteries.

Phase 3: Porsche plans to produce new high-voltage battery cells using a specific amount of recycled materials and test them in its own vehicles.
